World Journalists Federation (WJF) Observes World Press Freedom Day 2025: “Only Through Journalism Do We See the Full Picture”
On World Press Freedom Day 2025, the World Journalists Federation (WJF) joins journalists, media organizations, and citizens around the world in honoring the essential role of free, independent journalism in democratic society. This year’s theme, “Only Through Journalism Do We See the Full Picture,” underscores the vital need for truthful, comprehensive reporting in an era of deepening conflict, disinformation, and polarized narratives.
As the media faces mounting pressure from legal threats and censorship to violence and online harassment the WJF calls on all governments, institutions, and communities to reaffirm their commitment to press freedom as a cornerstone of transparency, accountability, and human rights.
In a statement marking the occasion, the President of the WJF said:
“Without journalism, the world becomes fragmented and distorted. Today, we remind the global community that a free press is not just a profession it is a public good. Journalists must be able to work without fear, intimidation, or interference.”
The General Secretary of the WJF emphasized the urgent need for action:
“Across continents, journalists are silenced, imprisoned, and in some cases, killed for doing their jobs. On this World Press Freedom Day, we demand stronger legal protections, better safety protocols, and greater recognition of journalism’s role in safeguarding democracy and truth.”
As we mark this important day, the World Journalists Federation calls on everyone from policymakers to the public to stand in solidarity with those who risk their lives to ensure the world stays informed.
