WJF Strongly Condemns the Arrest and Torture of Journalist Tariq Ali Virk

The World Journalists Federation (WJF) expresses its strongest condemnation of the shocking and deeply troubling incident involving the arrest, physical assault, and unlawful detention of Tariq Ali Virk, President of the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ), at New Town Police Station, Rawalpindi.

This unacceptable act is not only an attack on a courageous and principled journalist leader, but also a direct assault on the values of free media and democracy. The treatment of Tariq Ali Virk—an outspoken advocate for journalistic rights—sets a dangerous precedent. If leading voices of the media are subjected to violence and humiliation, it raises alarming questions about the safety and dignity of all citizens in Pakistan.

The WJF calls upon the Chief Minister of Punjab, the Inspector General of Police, and other high-ranking authorities to take immediate and decisive notice of this incident. Those responsible, including SHO Tayyab Zaheer Baig and all officers involved, must be immediately suspended and criminal proceedings must be initiated without delay.

In its official statement, the WJF Governing Body declared that such oppressive tactics against journalists represent a clear and deliberate attack on press freedom. The actions against Tariq Ali Virk reflect a broader and deeply concerning trend of silencing dissent and punishing truth-telling. This not only endangers the profession of journalism, but also undermines the democratic structure of society.

Let it be known that the journalist community has never bowed to coercion—and it will not back down now. Freedom of expression remains non-negotiable. The superficial and symbolic actions taken thus far by the police authorities are wholly unacceptable and must be replaced by firm accountability.

In line with the stance of the National Press Club Islamabad, the leadership of the World Journalists Federation demands a high-level and transparent investigation into the incident. All officers involved must be held accountable through immediate suspension and registration of FIRs for their unlawful conduct. Furthermore, the government must introduce a comprehensive and transparent policy to ensure the protection of journalists nationwide.

The increasing pressure on the media and growing interference by institutions must be stopped. The right to report, question, and inform must be upheld without fear or favor.
